Manchester United’s Mason Mount has rallied the troops, insisting that team spirit is still strong under Erik ten Hag despite a setback against Arsenal in their US pre-season opener.

Mount faced a challenging first season at Old Trafford, with injuries limiting his contribution. Ahead of the tour’s kick-off, Ten Hag defended Mount, telling supporters to hold off on their judgement.

“You can’t judge his season because he was injured,” said Ten Hag. “Don’t judge him. But when he is fit, he will be a very good player for us, and we can use him, versatile.”

The Dutch manager highlighted the importance of having adaptable players: “You need certain types in the squad, team players, multifunctional players he is one of the players who can play in several positions, he will help the team.”

In the clash with Arsenal, Mount took up a position on the right flank as United succumbed to a 2-1 defeat by their league rivals.

Rasmus Hojlund notched the opening goal but had to leave the pitch due to injury shortly after. Arsenal levelled the score in the first half with a goal from Gabriel Jesus, amidst claims of offside.

Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory for Arsenal in the second half, while United claimed a consolation win in a post-match penalty shootout. The match also saw Leny Yoro exit early due to injury, adding to United’s concerns.

Following the match, Mount took to Instagram to share his optimistic outlook on the game’s outcome. He posted a photo of himself being assisted by Casemiro with the caption: “Together,” and another celebrating with Hojlund, captioned: “Love it lads.”

Manchester United will be back in action early next month as they face Real Betis at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on August 1. Their Premier League season begins at home against Fulham.
