Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo had a pretty strong Copa America.
Ecuador could not get past the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Argentina, but Moises Caicedo can still be pleased with his contribution at the tournament.
The 22-year-old will also be happy with how he finished last season at Chelsea.
He put in some really strong performances towards the end of the campaign, including against Brighton & Hove Albion, where he scored an absolutely ridiculous goal.
Enzo Maresca will be hoping for Caicedo to reproduce that form when the new season starts. The Ecuadorian remains the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history.
The area Moises Caicedo excelled in at the Copa America
Over the last few seasons, Caicedo has proven at Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion that he is very good at stopping attacks.
The above was also clear to see at this year’s Copa America.
According to WhoScored, Caicedo made 10 interceptions. That was more than any other player bar Bolivia’s Luis Haquin, who also managed to make 10.
Caicedo has perhaps not proven yet that he is a £100m midfielder. But in recent months, he has done his job for both his club and country.
Moises Caicedo’s role under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea
What Caicedo did at the Copa America, Maresca will be expecting him to do similar at Chelsea this upcoming season.
Playing alongside the likes of Enzo Fernandez and new signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Caicedo is going to have to be the team’s ball-winner.
The Ecuador international will have no problem with that, though. It is what he is good at, as he recently showed in the United States of America.
Again, Caicedo is Chelsea’s biggest-ever purchase, while Fernandez was not a low-budget signing either.
A lot of pressure will be on them in the new campaign. They are two Chelsea players who undoubtedly need to deliver in this new era under Maresca.
