Gareth Southgate has lost two successive Euros finals as England manager
England suffered another dose of European Championship agony on Sunday. Mikel Oyarzabal inspired Spain to a late 2-1 win in Berlin as England became the first country ever to lose back-to-back Euros finals.
Even substituting Harry Kane off for semi-final hero Ollie Watkins on the hour mark wasn’t enough for the Three Lions. Fellow sub Cole Palmer pulled Gareth Southgate’s team level before Oyarzabal settled matter on 86 minutes.
All the talk now is about Southgate’s future after an eight-year reign which has twice seen him come painfully close to becoming only the second manager of the men’s team to win a trophy.
Instead, England must wait until the 2026 World Cup to end a now 60-year silverware drought. But should Southgate be the man on the touchline when Kane and co. jet across the Atlantic Ocean to try and bring football home?
The ex-Middlesbrough manager’s contract with the FA expires this December. Pre-tournament there were claims English football’s governing body were keen to extend Southgate’s contract.
But should they now do a U-turn on that stance and part ways with the 53-year-old? Any decision is likely to be Southgate’s, with his future expected to be decided by him rather than by the FA.

Gareth Southgate was visibly gutted after England’s defeat in Berlin
The manager himself said after the agony against Spain: “It’s hard to reflect so soon after a defeat like this, to take England to two finals has never been done but we came here to win and we haven’t been able to do that.
“I totally understand the question and understand you need to ask it but I need to have those conversations with important people behind the scenes, I’m not discussing that publicly first.

“Without a doubt, England have fabulous young players and they have a lot of experience of tournaments now. Many of this squad will be around in two, four, six even eight years’ time. We have been consistently back in matches that matter – it’s the last step I haven’t been able to do.
“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I’m going to talk to the right people and, yeah, it’s just not for now.”
