Liverpool boss Arne Slot could welcome a familiar face back to the club
Dirk Kuyt has revealed he has been in contact with Liverpool, expressing he is keen to consider a future role at the club under new manager Arne Slot.
Kuyt, who boasts an impressive record of over 100 goals in nearly 200 appearances for former club Feyenoord, acknowledged the strong connection he shares with Slot. The Dutch manager, who previously guided Feyenoord to the Europa Conference League final, has taken the reins at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s exit.
The former Liverpool striker spoke highly of Slot, who has also coached Kuyt’s son who is now in the Feyenoord academy. While Kuyt is currently at the helm of Belgian outfit Beerschot, he is optimistic about Slot’s prospects at Anfield and has hinted at a possible comeback.
In an exclusive chat with Ladbrokes 1-2-Free, Kuyt praised Slot’s dedication and insight into the game: “Arne Slot is a family man, but he’s also a guy who is so into football – he’s 24/7 football. If you watch his press conferences, you’ll see he speaks very well and clearly expresses himself.
“He can be funny sometimes, but he’s also very straightforward. He knows everything about football; not only Dutch football, but you could ask him anything about football and I think he could give you an answer. Premier League fans are going to like him.
“Of course, if I can help Liverpool in any way, then I will. I’ve always been in contact with people at the club. I did some work for the foundation of the club, and I’ve done some commercial work for them, too. I’ve always been close with them. On or off the pitch, I’ve always tried to help the club because when you sign for Liverpool, you become part of a family.”
Dirk Kuyt has made a promising start to his managerial career despite a rocky tenure at Eredivisie’s ADO Den Haag, which ended with his dismissal in November before he was replaced by Dick Advocaat.
However, his fortunes have turned in Belgium, where he successfully guided Beerschot to promotion in his debut season. As a player, Kuyt moved to Liverpool from Feyenoord in 2006, following a stellar 29-goal season in the Eredivisie.
He quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield, notably scoring the decisive penalty against Chelsea in the 2006/07 Champions League semi-final shootout and netting a goal in the final, despite Liverpool’s loss to AC Milan.
Over the years, Kuyt became known for his knack for producing in crucial matches and added a League Cup to his accolades in 2012. That summer, he departed for Fenerbahce, where he made 130 appearances before hanging up his boots.
Kuyt made a triumphant return to Feyenoord, before retiring in style by scoring a hat-trick that secured the club’s first league title since 1999. He retired three days later.
The renowned Dutch forward has demonstrated a talent for coaching and could potentially join Slot’s team as the new Liverpool manager prepares for his inaugural Premier League season.
