Muhamed Tijani used to watch Wayne Rooney play growing up in Nigeria. Now, he is fully embracing the opportunity to work under him as an Argyle player.
Centre forward Muhamed became the Greens’ third signing of the close season, joining on a season-long loan from Slavia Prague, for whom he played – and scored – in the Europa League last season. A last-minute winner from Tijani, against FC Sheriff, secured Slavia’s group-topping position over eventual semi-finalists AS Roma.
Now, Tijani is excited to have an opportunity to play in this country, and particularly for a former England striker.
“It feels amazing being here, I am happy about it,” Muhamed told Argyle TV. “I have a dream of playing in the Premier League and this is one of the ways to go there. When I heard that Wayne Rooney is the new Head Coach, I was like: ‘yeah, I’m going to go there!’
“Whilst growing up, I watched some of his games. He was excellent, so learning from him will be a great experience for me.
“It’s my first time in England, and I can’t wait to take up the challenge.”
Moving from Nigeria to Europe as an 18-year-old is no easy feat. However, Tijani’s desire to succeed propelled him through the Czech First League before finally ending up with Slavia Prague in the summer of 2023.
“It was quite tough at the beginning, but it turned out great, and I’m happy,” he explained.
“I started with Banik Ostrava, with the Under-19s. It was quick for me to get into the first team, and I started playing. Then I moved on loan because there was a large squad, and after, I came back and moved to another loan again. I finally got my playing time and a spot in the team, so, it was quite a rollercoaster between the teams.”
With pre-season the next key date on the list, Tijani is excited to work under the guidance of Rooney and meet his new teammates. He also addressed the Green Army with what to expect from the tall 23-year-old.
“Firstly, I would like to say my hold-up play,” he said. “I’m very good at that and then my goal scoring with headers as well; I’m very strong in the air. I’m also a team player.
“I’m the type of player who always wants to win and score goals. You should expect goals and wins.”
