Kobbie Mainoo terrorises Liverpool star in England training and proves worth at Euro 2024

England ace Kobbie Mainoo is set to start for his country when they take on Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Sunday afternoon, with the team being ‘leaked’ earlier this week. And the Manchester United midfielder gave Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate an illustration of his talents during training on Thursday as he terrorised Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Mainoo was a shining light for the Red Devils last season after forcing his way into Erik ten Hag’s team and scored in the FA Cup final as his side defeated Manchester City.

And his performances in red were rewarded by Southgate when he was selected in England’s 26-man squad for the Euros.

Mainoo came off the bench for the final four minutes as England opened their tournament with a 1-0 victory over Serbia.

He remained on the bench during the 1-1 draw with Denmark but then produced a fine display after being introduced as a half-time substitute in place of Conor Gallagher when the Three Lions drew 0-0 with Slovenia on Tuesday evening.

Mainoo’s performance last time out has made it impossible for Southgate to ignore the 19-year-old. And his efforts in training have been top-drawer as well if the footage released by the England social media channels is anything to go by.

In a video posted by England to X, Mainoo is seen holding off Gomez with his back to goal as he refuses to let the Liverpool defender have a sniff of the ball.

The teenager then drags the ball back between Gomez’s legs before running around the Champions League winner and retaining possession.

The clip goes on to show Mainoo playing a one-two with striker Ivan Toney, before the United man tapped home the ball into the back of the net. The footage will have left England fans purring, with the Three Lions aiming for huge improvements on the pitch after whimpering through the group stages.

“We’re ready whenever we’re called upon, like the rest of the lads are,” Mainoo told ITV in the aftermath of the bore draw with Slovenia after being asked about his impact and the performance of fellow sub Cole Palmer.

“We train hard and then in the games when we get our chances we try to impress so we can start and we can help the team as much as possible.

“I love football, I love playing. So anyone who’s on the bench wants to come on the pitch.”
