Manchester United could look to sell Mason Greenwood this summer following his loan spell in Spain
Manchester United have reportedly opened talks to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille. The one-cap England international hasn’t played for the Red Devils since January 2022 and spent last season on loan at Getafe.
United suspended Greenwood after he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
But they refused to reintegrate him into their team after the charges were later dropped and instead shipped him off to Spain on a temporary basis.
According to The Athletic, Marseille are exploring a deal to sign Greenwood and have opened talks with United.
Discussions are said to be at an early stage and finances are yet to be discussed. But the player is believed to favour a move to Marseille following positive dialogue with the French team.
A move to Marseille could also see Greenwood linking up with Roberto De Zerbi, with the 45-year-old reportedly agreeing to take charge at the Orange Velodrome after leaving Brighton at the end of last season.

United players are due back for pre-season training on Monday, July 8 before taking on Rosenborg in Norway a week later. The club would prefer to sell Greenwood this summer, but aren’t ruling out another loan move or even a return to training alongside his United team-mates.
The Red Devils concluded an internal investigation into the allegations made against Greenwood last summer and admitted there would be “difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.” And the club added: “it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford.”
A whole host of clubs have been linked with his services this summer, including Juventus, Lazio and Napoli, while teams in Germany, Spain and Portugal are also keeping tabs on his situation at Old Trafford. Getafe are also keen to welcome him back after the 22-year-old bagged 10 goals in 36 appearances during his loan spell.

Mason Greenwood hasn’t played for Manchester United since January 2022
Greenwood has made 129 appearances for the Red Devils after being handed his debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a Champions League last 16 showdown with Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.
And the striker hinted that he wouldn’t be returning to Getafe after wishing the club’s fans “all the best” following his final appearance for them in May.
“Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season,” he wrote on Instagram in the aftermath of a 2-1 defeat to Mallorca. “Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my team-mates and club. A bitter sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”
