Man Utd add clauses to new Erik ten Hag contract as boss agrees deal worth nearly £30m

Erik ten Hag is on the brink of signing a new contract that will see him remain at Manchester United until 2027.

The Dutch manager has managed to turn his fortunes around, moving from the brink of the sack to securing a two-year contract extension worth nearly £30million.

Ten Hag, who was given the go-ahead to continue as United’s boss earlier this month, has in principle agreed to the new deal after discussions with club executives.

It is understood that United and Ten Hag’s representatives are finalising the terms of the new contract, which is expected to be confirmed this week.

The contract will contain clauses related to both his and the team’s performance.

As part of the new agreement, there will be a reshuffle of United’s coaching staff, with ex-striker Ruud van Nistelrooy set to rejoin the club as part of Ten Hag’s backroom team.

Van Nistelrooy was considered for the role of succeeding Vincent Kompany as Burnley manager but declined the offer from the Clarets in order to take up a coaching position at his old club United.

After leading United to an impressive FA Cup final victory over arch-rivals Manchester City, Ten Hag was left in uncertainty for nearly three weeks.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe conducted a review of Ten Hag and United’s season before deciding to retain him. However, not before discussing the possibility of offering the job to Thomas Tuchel.

United chose to stick with Ten Hag and sent a delegation to Ibiza, where the 54-year-old was on holiday, to assure him his position was secure.

This decision came with the promise of a new contract, which is now nearing confirmation.

United are set to return to preseason training on July 8, with Ten Hag and his squad flying to the United States for a pre-season tour that includes games against Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool.
