The U.S. men’s national soccer team’s quest to build an abundance of momentum for Copa América and through to the 2026 World Cup hit a brick wall on Saturday.

The USMNT dropped a dud of a performance in a 5-1 loss to Colombia, the squad’s worst loss since the Jürgen Klinsmann era.

That result is an unfortunate and humbling moment for coach Gregg Berhalter’s assemblage. The task gets even tougher on Wednesday night when the team plays perennial world soccer-football powerhouse Brazil in its second Copa América tune-up match. Brazil, alongside South American rival Argentina, will enter this summer’s Copa América as a heavy favorite to win the tournament. The USMNT owns a 1-18-0 record against Brazil, with the lone victory coming in the semifinals of the 1998 Concacaf Gold Cup.
