Manchester City’s disappointing Champions League campaign has already cost the pre-tournament favourites nearly £6million in prize money.

The club has only managed to secure two victories from their first six games, with two draws and two losses also on their record.

Each group stage win brings in £1.73million and each draw earns £580,000, meaning City have only pocketed £5.76m of the available £10.76m.

In stark contrast, Liverpool have bagged the full amount after triumphing in their first six matches and stand to add another £3.46million if they continue their winning streak in the final two games.

City appear to be heading for a play-off in their quest to reach the last 16.

They currently sit in 22nd place in the table, with an away game against Paris St Germain and a home match against Club Brugge still to come.

The 16 teams progressing to the play-offs will receive an additional £820,000 from UEFA. Any club that advances into the last 16 will claim a further £9.1million in prize money.

City have made it to the Champions League knock-out stages for the past 11 seasons and won the European Cup for the first time in 2023. Failing to reach the last 16 would be a significant setback for both the club’s prestige and its finances.
