With two-and-a-half weeks until the transfer window swings open on New Year’s Day, clubs in the Premier League and beyond are knee-deep in planning for how best to attack the market.

Manchester United newcomer Ruben Amorim will be keen to bolster his squad, while Liverpool and Arsenal both have strong incentives to buy as they hunt down the title. Manchester City, meanwhile, are in the unusual position of needing to strengthen after making a woeful start to the season.

Scanning down the table, there are six teams separated from the rest in a looming scrap for relegation. Whichever sides recruit the wisest next month will boost their chances of survival.

Arteta picks transfer chief preference

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants Roberto Olabe to replace Edu as the club’s sporting director, according to The Daily Mail.

Olabe is leaving Real Sociedad at the end of the season, having served as their transfer chief since 2016.

The Spanish side and Arsenal have conducted extensive transfer business in recent years, and Arteta has his own history with Sociedad, who he represented as a player.

Dan Ashworth, Txiki Begiristain and Luis Campos are also believed to be in the frame for the job.

Joe Gomez: I was close to leaving Liverpool

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has admitted that he was close to leaving Anfield in the summer.

The defender has been with the Reds for nine years, but with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate at centre-back, and Jarell Quansah also pushing for more minutes, regular opportunities have been hard to come by.

“I was close to leaving Liverpool last summer, it was definitely for real,” Gomez told The Athletic. “But my focus was always on the club.

“I know how blessed I am to be here. It will be 10 years next summer. I don’t take that for granted. I love Liverpool.”

Prem quartet chase Greek prodigy

Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham are all interested in wonderkid Stefanos Tzimas, according to Kicker.

Nurnberg have taken the 18-year-old on loan from PAOK this season and he has scored seven goals in 12 German second-tier games.

The loan agreement will allow Nurnberg to sign Tzimas permanently for £15million at the end of the season.

And if they opt to buy him and then sell for a profit, the Prem quartet in question will not be his only suitors.

Chelsea star wants January exit

Chelsea youngster Omari Kellyman is reportedly seeking a loan move in January after failing to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge.

The teenager cost a whopping £19million during the summer, despite having only made six senior appearances for Aston Villa. But Blues manager Enzo Maresca did not give him a sniff across the first four matches of the season before he was sidelined by a hamstring injury.

According to BBC Sport, Kellyman is weighing up his loan options with a focus on Championship sides.

During his injury absence, Kellyman has been ‘working hard’ on his fitness and putting on muscle in the gym.

Liverpool sent Lennon Miller message

Lennon Miller’s dad claims that regular playing time will be essential to deciding where he makes his next move.

Miller, son of former Scottish international Lee, has reportedly piqued the interest of Liverpool and other top clubs with his performances at Motherwell.

The 18-year-old is already a first-team regular in Scotland. And his father would not want to see him slotting back into a youth setup elsewhere.

“My advice to Lennon is you need to be playing,” he told The Warm-Up. “His next move is so important to play and develop.

“He doesn’t want to go and play in the under-23s and build himself up, he’s a first-team player now. People are respecting him for that.”

Carra: Salah will sign Liverpool extension for one reason

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Mohamed Salah will extend his stay on Merseyside due to a lack of options elsewhere.

The Egyptian’s deal runs out in June and there is rampant speculation about whether he will commit to another year.

Carragher told the Stick to Football Podcast: “How many attackers do Real Madrid have? Barcelona are in dire straits financially, PSG are nowhere near the team Liverpool are – there are only four or five teams that can realistically win the Champions League and Liverpool are one of them.

“He will stay as I’m not sure there are too many options. He’s not ready to go to Saudi – he can do that in three years’ time. Salah is that driven as a footballer to win the record of most goals – or whatever that may be for Liverpool.”

Conte green-lights Zirkzee move

Antonio Conte has given the green light for Napoli to try and sign Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United, according to Il Mattino.

The Azzurri made a successful deal with United during the summer, with Scott McTominay quickly becoming a big success in Italy.

And Conte reportedly has the appetite for another Red Devils agreement.

Zirkzee has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford after signing for £36.5million this summer.

But he was effective in Serie A with Bologna last term, where he hit 11 league goals.

Chelsea transfer ‘moving quickly’

Italian side Monza are ‘moving quickly’ in their bid to sign Cesare Casadei on loan from Chelsea, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Casadei has found minutes hard to come by this season despite previously working under Enzo Maresca at Leicester City.

And the 21-year-old could be shipped out of Stamford Bridge for the second half of the campaign so that he can continue his development.

Amid competition for Casadei’s signature, Monza are reportedly hoping to conclude their loan agreement in the first days of the January transfer window.

Man Utd rub salt in Marcus Rashford’s wounds

Manchester United have knocked two-thirds off Marcus Rashford’s asking price as they bid to offload the misfiring forward.

The Daily Mail claim that United would entertain offers in the region of £40million in January.

That’s down from the mega £120m they were asking for him only last year, according to reports.

Rashford may already be reeling from the news that his boyhood club would be willing to sell him for the right price.

And claims that they are now willing to part company for a bargain fee will not make him feel much better.
