The draw for next year’s Club World Cup will take place today, with Chelsea and Manchester City the only English clubs involved in the new-look competition.

The expanded tournament will see 32 teams drawn into eight groups in a similar format to the regular World Cup. The top two teams from each group will go into the knockout stages, with the final set to be held in New Jersey on July 13, 2025.

It comes after FIFA were left without a TV broadcaster for the revamped event, with streaming service DAZN set to air the competition for free.

The governing body had struggled to drum up interest from broadcasters and opted to hand the rights to DAZN with just six months until the tournament gets underway.

Trump makes surprise appearance

Donald Trump appears in a short video message to underline his excitement at the United States hosting the Club World Cup.

He claims that his son, Barron, is a promising ‘soccer’ player and insists he has a great relationship with Gianni Infantino.

Infantino speaks

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says he is loving the ‘Miami vibes’ as he gives a speech to the audience.

He says the revamped Club World Club is about ‘inclusivity’ and claims it will start a ‘new era’ in football.

The 54-year-old says ‘two or three million’ fans will travel in the United States for the tournament with billions more watching around the world.

He also talks up the broadcast agreement with DAZN, which will allow fans to watch the action for free.

Draw ceremony opens

A musical number opens the ceremony before tonight’s host, Samantha Johnson, takes to the stage.

There will, as usual, be a fair bit of chatter before the actual draw is conducted.

FIFA left red-faced as DAZN secure broadcast rights

FIFA have been left without a TV broadcaster for next year’s Club World Cup, with streaming service DAZN set to air the competition for free.

The governing body had struggled to drum up interest from broadcasters despite the tournament being less than 12 months away.

Earlier this year, it was reported that FIFA president Gianni Infantino held an emergency briefing with TV executives to secure a commercial deal.

The rights were ultimately handed to DAZN, where viewers will be able to watch the tournament at no extra cost.

Pots in full

Here’s a look at the teams in each of the four pots…

Pot One: Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Flamengo, Palmeiras, River Plate, Fluminense.

Pot Two: Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Porto, Atlético Madrid, Benfica, Juventus, RB Salzburg.

Pot Three: Al Hilal, Ulsan, Al Ahly, Wydad, Monterrey, Leon, Boca Juniors, Botafogo.

Pot Four: Urawa Reds, Al Ain, Esperance, Mamelodi Sundowns, Pachuca, Seattle Sounders, Auckland City, Inter Miami.

How does the draw work?

The teams involved will be drawn into eight separate groups, which will be made up of one team from each of the four pots.

There is also a ‘paired seeding’ rule to keep the top teams on opposite sides of the draw, ensuring Real Madrid and Manchester City cannot face each other until the semi-finals.

This will also apply to Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain as well as River Plate and Flamengo.

No group can feature more than one team from the same confederation except UEFA, which will have 12 teams in the draw.

As a result, four of the eight groups will contain two European clubs.
