To suggest that Mason Mount’s Manchester United career has been underwhelming would be a colossal understatement; with the midfielder having barely made an impact since his arrival.

After Mount shone against Bodo/Glimt last night, fans flocked to social media claiming it was his best performance in a United shirt – yet this wasn’t exactly a high bar given it’s only been his ninth start in over a year.

Despite the slow start, Ruben Amorim remains confident in Mount repaying the hefty transfer fee sent to Chelsea for his services last summer.

“The first thing is that he is working really hard, Amorim explained after the 3-2 win against the Norwegian champions.

“And then you have to understand the human also. He wants this really badly. That is the most important thing.”

When Mount was signed by United in July 2023 for a staggering £55million, the club was ecstatic, celebrating the transfer as a major achievement.

The Red Devils even handed him the iconic number seven shirt – worn by legends such as George Best, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo during the club’s illustrious history.

However, Mount has had a rough time of things since landing at Old Trafford. Injuries have plagued his stay so far, in which he’s registered just one goal and no assists in 18 Premier League games.

Despite his early struggles, Amorim has issued a firm vote of confidence in the England international.

The United boss added: “He has proven to all of you that he is a talented player. He was European champion – so we believe a lot in him.

“He has to stay fit. And like all the guys in the team, they are quality players, they have to improve and believe in themselves.”

Having achieved European glory with Chelsea in 2021 by beating Manchester City in Porto and proving vital for England under Gareth Southgate, starting in the Euro 2020 final against Italy – Mount’s international rapport peaked.

However, he hasn’t had a look-in since his last cap in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

With Amorim’s backing, he hopes not only to become a staple in United’s line-up but also to recapture the gaze of England’s new manager, and his former boss, Thomas Tuchel.

And going by Amorim’s latest remarks, Mount is set to become pivotal in his squad’s future.

Amorim praised the player, continuing: “He did a great job [against Bodo/Glimt] – he did 60 minutes with high intensity.

“And you see in some moments and details that Mason Mount is a proper footballer. We believe a lot … and we especially believe a lot in Mason Mount.”
