Viktor Gyokeres is one of the most sought after forwards in Europe
Sporting CP’s superstar forward Viktor Gyokeres would seemingly happily take the opportunity to play under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United. The 26-year-old Swedish sensation became one of the most feared forwards in world football while playing under Amorim in Portugal.
Last season, Gyokeres’ staggering tally of 43 goals and 15 assists was instrumental in Sporting’s surge to clinch the Primeira Liga crown. With Amorim vacating the managerial seat at the Jose Alvalade Stadium for a new challenge at Old Trafford, murmurs about Gyokeres joining the Red Devils have intensified.
Reports suggest that while the forward’s buyout clause is understood to be around £83million, Sporting might consider proposals closer to £66m. Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to be interested, but it’s understood ex-Coventry City striker Gyokeres would be keen on returning to England to work with Amorim again.
According to Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, who was speaking on behalf of MyBettingSites.co.uk, Gyokeres would relish the chance to team up with United head coach Amorim at Old Trafford. The Italian reporter said: “Amorim is a really good and smart manager.
“The first thing for a smart coach is to closely see the players he has in the squad, so he will use the coming months for that. The players will get a chance to show what they can. But of course, he will do everything to get Gyokeres.
“He will be the striker next summer and everybody will try to get him. Napoli tried to get him before they signed Lukaku but the price is higher now.
“I think Gyokeres could go to Manchester United, because he knows the manager and it seems like the perfect wedding in some way. There is no deal right now, but both Amorim and Gyokeres would be very happy to work together again.”
Amorim and Gyokeres were a potent combination
Currently, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund are the main centre-forward options for United, while Marcus Rashford led the line in Amorim’s debut match against Ipswich Town, where he scored in their 1-1 draw. Hojlund shone during Amorim’s first game at Old Trafford on Thursday, delivering a brace and an assist in the 3-2 home win over Norwegian team FK Bodo/Glimt.
Following the match, Hojlund expressed his belief that he is the man to take responsibility and grab the goals for Amorim. In a post-match interview, he confidently said: “I think the new system and new ideas are suiting my style of play. I still try to do the same, but obviously we play a different sort of football and system now. I’ve played this sort of football, I don’t say it is the same, but a 3-4-3, I used to play that at Atalanta a little bit the same.
“I just try to do my job every time I step on the pitch. I think I showed last season, with being top scorer for the team, that I can score goals. I’m still very young, but obviously I would like to take the responsibility and that’s why I also took the No. 9 shirt this year, because I think I want to take it to the next level and the next step.
“But yeah, I still have a lot to grow. I’m still not the finished article. I’m only 21. I think I’ve improved on sort of holding and getting my back to the goal play, and I think it comes with age. Last year I had to learn the Premier League and these sorts of things. I think I get better with these sort of things every time I step foot on the pitch.”
