Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was seen waiting in the Anfield tunnel to exchange shirts with his England team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool’s victory on Wednesday night.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes and enduring a tough defeat, Bellingham was eager to swap jerseys with Alexander-Arnold, who didn’t feature in the match but could potentially join him at Madrid when his Liverpool contract expires this summer.

The pair have formed a strong bond during their time with the national team, which was evident as Bellingham patiently waited by the dressing room doors for Ryan Gravenberch to return with Alexander-Arnold’s shirt.

In exchange, Bellingham handed over his own jersey before retreating to the visitor’s dressing room.

However, it wasn’t all smiles for Bellingham, who faced jeers from the crowd during the Champions League clash.

Superstar Kylian Mbappe, who chose Real Madrid over Liverpool, was met with a cacophony of jeers at Bernabeu, while the hosts, without Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Daniel Carvajal due to injuries, were outclassed by Arne Slot’s side.

However, Bellingham did not accept that as an excuse, stressing the need for improvement: “They were better than us. Sometimes we have to be honest.

“We didn’t dominate the game and the chances we had to harm them were not clear-cut. It’s disappointing. We knew it was going to be tough, but we would’ve liked to play better.

“Mbappe gives us a lot and I’m sure he’ll give us a lot in the future. It can happen when you take responsibility. Anyone can miss a penalty and that wasn’t the reason we lost today. It was a collective issue. We win together and we lose together.”,

And on the topic of injuries impacting their performance, he was clear: “It’s not an excuse. They also had injuries and players who were not 100 per cent.

“It’s part of the game and you have to deal with it. When we had the ball we didn’t threaten enough and that’s not because of injuries and players who weren’t there. We didn’t take responsibility. We didn’t take the bull by the horns and they did.”
