Sepp van den Berg, the former Liverpool defender who made a £25million switch to Brentford this summer, insists he has no second thoughts about his decision to exit Anfield.

With only four senior outings for the Reds and after several loan spells throughout his five years with the club, the 22-year-old felt it was the right call with first-team opportunities limited under coach Arne Slot.

Slot prefers Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and up-and-comer Jarrell Quansah. Liverpool have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season with Van Dijk and Konate key.

Van den Berg, who has already started 12 of Brentford’s 14 games, stated: “I was very clear from the start that I wanted to play this season.

“At Liverpool you have two of the best centre-backs in the world at the moment. To me it was the right moment to leave, I’m at the age when I needed to play.

“I’ve done it for many years going out on loan. It was time for me to make the permanent move and establish myself as a Premier League player and that’s what I’m doing so far. I made the right decision (but) still a long way to go.”
