Sir Alex Ferguson will no longer be a Man Utd ambassador next season
Rene Meulensteen, the former right-hand man to Sir Alex Ferguson, has slammed Manchester United for their handling of the legendary manager’s ambassadorial departure.
The Dutchman, who served as first-team coach from 2007 to 2013, believes the club should have been more transparent about the reasons behind the termination of Ferguson’s £2.16 million-a-year contract.
Many have called it a mistake to let the Scot go due to his history with United but Meulensteen says their second error is for INEOS not to have clearly explained why they have done so.
Meulensteen said: “I find it surprising that Ferguson’s contract as an ambassador has been terminated, given his history.
“However, I understand that this was discussed between the club and Sir Alex. It would have been wise for the club to issue a statement on the reasons so that it was clear to everyone.
“It would also have stopped any negative speculation and publicity surrounding this decision.
“As far as I know, he is still a member of the board and therefore still important to the club.
“In my opinion, it is essential to honour the contributions of such a pivotal figure in the club’s history.”
Additionally, Meulensteen weighed in on the potential appointment of Ruben Amorim, remarking: “Amorim emerged as a promising coach at Sporting, but whether or not he is the right fit for Manchester United will depend on his ability to adapt to the pressures of the Premier League.
“His tactical approach may be refreshing, but experience at a club of United’s stature is crucial.
“Ten Hag faced significant challenges, including squad depth and injuries, and while he showed tactical intelligence, a lack of performance and inconsistent results hampered his success.”
