Matthijs de Ligt is expecting changes at Man Utd
Manchester United’s recent signing Matthijs de Ligt has acknowledged that the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim could shake things up at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old took charge on Monday after an impressive stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he secured two league titles in just over four years.
Amorim steps into the shoes of Erik ten Hag, who was shown the door last month following a lacklustre start to the season, with United managing only four wins in their first 13 matches. Club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will not be joining Amorim’s coaching team, had temporarily taken the reins, leading the team to an unbeaten run and restoring positivity among fans and players alike.
De Ligt, who made the switch from Bayern Munich to Manchester United this summer for a hefty £42 million, featured in three of Van Nistelrooy’s matches but is aware that his place is not assured under the new management.
“I don’t know much about him yet, but I do know that he did a good job at Sporting,” De Ligt revealed to Viaplay after Sunday’s convincing 3-0 victory against Leicester City. “With a new coach, it’s always a bit of a wait and see. You have to do your very best and remain yourself.”
The Dutch centre-back faces a period of uncertainty as United’s next game isn’t until November 24, when they face newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
Ruben Amorim will have to wait for the majority of his squad to return from international duty
During the international break, De Ligt hopes to make a strong impression on Amorim with his national team performances in the upcoming Nations League games against Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Following his last match as Sporting boss, a thrilling 4-2 win over Braga that extended their perfect season start, Amorim has dropped a major hint that he will import his proven 3-4-3 setup to Old Trafford.
“I know how I am going to play in the beginning, because you have to start with a structure that you know,” Amorim said. “Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack, I will discover that in the next few weeks.
“He added, facing the challenge of little time for training: “We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well. You can take whatever you want from that.”
