Ruben Amorim’s Sporting beat Man City 4-1.
Manchester United have commonly been the Manchester club enduring a harrowing night in Europe since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement. However, on Tuesday, it was Manchester City’s turn to suffer a nightmare Champions League outing as Pep Guardiola’s side fell to a 4-1 defeat at Sporting.
Incoming United head coach Ruben Amorim oversaw the devastating demolition job on his emotional Jose Alvalade Stadium farewell.
And the Red Devils couldn’t resist joining in on the online fanfare after Viktor Gyokeres’ ruthless hat-trick and Maximiliano Araujo cancelled out Phil Foden’s early opener.
Shock and celebration swirled throughout United’s sections of social media as the club’s new boss spearheaded a humiliation of their bitter rivals.
And United issued a reminder that Amorim was on his way to Old Trafford by reposting one of their initial posts confirming his appointment on X.
The M16 giants announced that Amorim had agreed a contract until 2027 last week, just days after sacking Erik ten Hag.
After his final match in charge of Sporting at former club Braga on Sunday, the 39-year-old will start work in Manchester on Monday.
Amorim’s first match as United boss will be the 24 November trip to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Man Utd issued a Ruben Amorim reminder.
United supporters were left in awe of Sporting’s counter-attacking masterclass against City, creating five chances to the visitors’ two despite having just 27 per cent possession.
Sporting’s triumph lifted the club to second in the Champions League table, having won three and drawn one of their four matches thus far.
That adds to the Lions’ perfect start to their Primeira Liga title defence, winning all 10 of their games, scoring 35 goals and conceding just three times.
However, Amorim insists that his Red Devils team won’t be able to play the same way, hinting he may have to adapt his tactics initially.
“I already said previously you cannot transport one reality into another,” Amorim explained after full-time in Lisbon.
“At Manchester United, you cannot play exactly like this. You cannot play so defensively, and so there, we will have to adapt.
“Clearly, it is really difficult to beat this team [City] and to beat Pep Guardiola. And he is not a worse manager than me.
“It will be a completely different world, a different team, we won’t have that much time to train, and we will begin from a different starting point.
“People can make their own judgements, but I say to the people of Manchester that this was a one-off.”
