Noel Gallagher wrapped up his TNT Sports appearance by telling viewers “I won’t be coming again” after watching his beloved Manchester City suffer a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Sporting on Tuesday night. The Oasis legend was in the commentary box alongside Darren Fletcher and Ally McCoist for the Champions League encounter.

Gallagher is one of the Citizens’ most famous supporters and made the trip to Estadio Jose Alvalade just three days after travelling to Dorset to be in the away end to watch City’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

He gave his thoughts throughout the evening, but his appearance was criticised by some people on social media as they questioned his credentials for the role.

City made a quick start to the match as they chased their third Champions League victory of the campaign, with Phil Foden firing the ball into the back of the net five minutes in after robbing Hidemasa Morita of possession.

And the visitors could have killed the game off in the opening period as they had other opportunities in front of goal. But they were punished seven minutes before the interval as Swedish sensation Viktor Gyokeres grabbed an equaliser.

Sporting took the lead 20 seconds into the second half through Maximiliano Araujo, before Gyokeres struck a third from the penalty spot. And after Erling Haaland had hit the crossbar with a penalty midway through the second half, Gyokeres completed his hat-trick with his second spot kick of the evening 10 minutes from the end.

Fletcher hinted after the match that Gallagher’s attendance may have been the issue for City after joking that he and McCoist usually witnessed Guardiola’s side winning.

And later on, Gallagher mischievously ruled out his return as Fletcher handed back to Laura Woods in the TNT Sports studio.

Gallagher, who is set to return to the stage with Oasis next year for their first tour since 2009, had egg on his face after the match as he exclaimed following Foden’s strike: “I didn’t think it would be this easy.”

But he articulated himself well throughout the encounter and even spoke about Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium, with the Spaniard’s current deal set to expire next summer.

“When he got here, we just scraped top four,” explained the 57-year-old. “He said to me before the [next] season started, we were going to win the league. I was thinking, ‘that is a big shout’. But he did the 100 points. He’s a wizard. The players are completely under his spell and they run through brick walls for him. He’s got it all.”

Gallagher then added: “I personally think he’ll stay for one more year because it gives everybody a chance to breathe and reflect on what he did.”
