As things stands, Mo Salah will leave Liverpool on a free at the end of the season
Micah Richards has outlined the importance of Liverpool renewing Mohamed Salah’s contract as he claimed: “He doesn’t have to play well to score big goals at big moments”.
The Egyptian forward scored his ninth goal of the season in all competitions on Saturday as Arne Slot’s side came from a goal down to beat Brighton 2-1. The super strike propelled the Reds to the top of the Premier League table, leaving them two points clear of Manchester City following their shock 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth, hours after Arsenal also lost 1-0 at Newcastle.
Despite his impressive start to the season, Salah could still depart the club as a free agent at the end of the season if he doesn’t agree new terms. Even though Salah turns 33 in June 2025, Richards is adamant that Liverpool must offer their star player a new contract, given his continued importance in the side.
Salah sent Liverpool to the top of the table with his strike
Salah’s strong form means he is now joint ninth in the list of the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorers with 162. And speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, ex-Man City defender Richards stated just how vital a player Salah is for the Reds, encouraging the club to offer him a new deal.
“He’s unbelievable, he really is. He’s excellent. Past Robbie Fowler, chasing Thierry Henry. There have been talks about contracts being under review or not – they have got to sign him,” Richards said. “It is imperative that they give him a two-year deal at the end of the season. He’ll be 33 in the summer, it will take him to 35.”
With not much movement in the way of a new deal and Salah’s excellent form making Liverpool fans believe once more that they can go the distance this season, the player’s latest social media post has also sent supporters into a spiral. Posting a photo of himself celebrating in front of the adoring Anfield faithful – the man they have affectionately dubbed ‘the Egyptian King’ – he captioned it with a very cryptic message that many fear means he could be coming to terms with the idea of leaving Liverpool.
Salah wrote: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end. That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”

Despite Salah’s age, the former Roma and Chelsea man appears to have stepped up his game this season with seven goals and five assists in his opening 10 Premier League games. However, there is little indication from the Liverpool hierarchy, as of yet, that they want to keep their fifth highest goalscorer of all time at the club.
It is believed that Salah has not yet decided yet what to do as he weighs up the possibility of either staying on Merseyside or entertaining a big money offer from the Saudi Pro League. Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be interested, however, it’s thought that he would want to leave Europe should he depart the Reds.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the winger would want to stay at Anfield as things stand and he is not pushing for a move away. Salah is likely to demand a longer contract, though, and not the shorter deal that Liverpool would likely favour.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also facing similar contract situations with both able to leave for free next summer. Liverpool now face a future without three of their most important players should they not act soon.
