Jadon Sancho was left out of the Chelsea squad against Newcastle on Wednesday night
The reason behind Jadon Sancho’s omission from the Chelsea squad against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup has been revealed. The 24-year-old made an impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge following his loan move from Manchester United but has since fallen off the radar.
Sancho registered three assists in his first three games for Chelsea but has been named on the bench in their last two Premier League fixtures. He would have been hoping to feature against Newcastle but was surprisingly left out of the matchday squad.
The forward was unable to play after picking up an illness ahead of the game, according to Fabrizio Romano, ending his hopes of being involved regardless of whether or not Enzo Maresca was planning to use him.
The on-loan United winger has not played in Chelsea’s last few games
Sancho did not play for Chelsea in their victory over Panathinaikos in the Europa Conference League last week. Days later, he was snubbed again as the Blues defeated Newcastle in the Premier League over the weekend.
Maresca explained that Sancho was dropped for ‘technical and tactical reasons’ and urged him to keep working hard on the training ground in order to earn his place back.
“Jadon is doing well since he arrived with us, for sure,” said the Chelsea boss earlier this week. “He cannot maintain the same level all season because the amount of games is huge, so the last two games he didn’t play.

“Not for any different reason, but just for a tactical and technical decision. No more than that. For sure, because of the amount of games, he is going to play many games and the only thing he has to do is to continue to work hard. When we give him the chance, take it.”
Quizzed on his team selection against Newcastle, Maresca added: “I’m always worried. I’m always concerned about the other team. Tomorrow will be the same. We just played two days ago and we know how good they are.
“Away, they are probably even more [dangerous] because of the environment. We have a session today. We will see in today’s session and then make a decision tomorrow.”
