Sir Alex Ferguson would be delighted if Mauricio Pochettino became the next Manchester United manager if previous history is considered. Pochettino shockingly departed Chelsea despite a strong end to the Premier League season, which saw the Blues win their last five matches and finish in the top six.

The west Londoners will qualify for the Europa League if Manchester City overcome United in the FA Cup Final for the second consecutive season. Chelsea also reached the League Cup final but were beaten by an injury-hit Liverpool side in extra-time.

Despite the up-turn in form and results, Pochettino left the club by ‘mutual consent’ soon after an internal review led by sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, as well as co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

Now the ex-Tottenham manager is a free agent, previous links to United have reared their head again. Pochettino was linked with the Red Devils when managing Spurs and was also identified as a possible contender when he was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.

But a move never materialised and those rumours ended with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag all taking over the reins at Old Trafford. However, the latter’s future at Old Trafford has become uncertain after being knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages and ending the campaign eighth in the Premier League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also understood to be an admirer of Pochettino as the Argentine was also linked with a move to Nice, another club the Ineos chief owns, in 2022.

If Pochettino was to become the next United manager, Ferguson would likely give the move his seal of approval. In 2021, TalkSPORT claimed Ferguson was pushing for Pochettino to replace Solskjaer when the Norwegian was sacked.

He was a contender alongside then Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers and Ten Hag. After Michael Carrick and Rangnick both oversaw United as interim bosses, the United board settled on Ten Hag.

The report claimed Ferguson saw Pochettino as the perfect fit to take United forward. It also claimed talks were underway between representatives of United and Pochettino.

Other reports claimed Pochettino was the one who turned down United’s approach as he was hoping to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. At the time, the legendary Italian manager was under pressure at the Bernabeu but went on to win his second Champions League title with Los Blancos.

This summer, United have also been linked with ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel and England manager Gareth Southgate.

Ten Hag will be in charge when United face City at Wembley but his position appears to be far from certain.
