Ruben Amorim could be headed to Manchester United
Ruben Amorim is reportedly a target for the Manchester United job after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday. United are pursuing a deal for the Sporting boss, who has made a huge splash in Portugal during his short coaching career.
Amorim, 39, got his big break when he was promoted from Braga B to first team coach in 2020 and won Taca da Liga in his fifth game in charge. After just three months in charge, he became the third-most expensive manager in history as Sporting paid his eye-watering release clause.
Since then, Amorim has masterminded two league title triumphs and two more League Cup wins while also remaining unbeaten this season. It is not difficult to see why United would view him as a top candidate, and here is a closer look at his personal life.
Net worth
Amorim became one of the most expensive coaches in world football when Sporting paid to bring him in from Braga in March 2020. The Lisbon club stumped up for his £8.3million (€10million) release clause after recognising Amorim as a standout young manager.
Given that he spent almost his whole playing career in the Primeira Liga – split between spells Belenenses, Benfica and Braga – Amorim would have had a sizable bank balance before moving into coaching. The Sun claims that Amorim has an estimated £13m net worth.
There have been reports that United will have to pay a similar £8.3m (€10m) release clause to get Amorim to Old Trafford. It is not the first time that Amorim has been in the running for a Premier League job. Last season, he was touted to be Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at Liverpool, flew to London for talks with West Ham and has more recently been linked with becoming Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City.

Relationship with wife
Amorim has been married to Maria Joao Diogo since 2013, having held their ceremony in front of 160 guests at the Palacio e Mosteiro de Sao Marcos in Coimbra. The couple have a son, Miguel, who was born in 2016. The Sporting boss has attempted to keep his relationship out of the spotlight, but the couple are claimed to have met while he was a Benfica player.
During his two loan spells at Braga, Amorim struck up a friendship with Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana, who is set to join Man City next season. While Amorim’s ties to the ex-Newcastle United midfielder have benefitted his coaching career, they have also worked out well for his wife’s business ventures.

Football relatives
Through his marriage, Amorim is part of an extended football family. One of his former Benfica team-mates Luis Filipe is married to Maria’s sister Ines. Filipe won two league titles during his career and played for the likes of Sporting, Benfica and Braga, while also earning three caps for Portugal B.
Meanwhile, Amorim’s other brother-in-law is former PSG sporting director Antero Henrique, who is married to Daniela Diogo. Henrique notably oversaw Neymar’s record-breaking transfer from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 and has been working for the Qatar Stars League since 2022.
