Sir Alex Ferguson is set to miss a second consecutive Manchester United match following the termination of his contract as an ambassador.

The 82-year-old Scot, who is widely recognised as the club’s most successful manager with 38 trophies under his belt during his 26-year tenure, was informed that his £2million-a-year deal would be terminated at the end of the season.

This comes as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ongoing cost-cutting measures across the club.

Ferguson, who became a global ambassador for the club after stepping down as manager in 2013, was informed of the decision in a face-to-face meeting with Ratcliffe.

The discussions regarding the termination of his ambassadorial role were conducted amicably. As a result, Ferguson and other members of the club’s football board are no longer permitted to visit the team’s dressing room.

Following the news, Ferguson missed the Red Devils’ victory over Brentford at the weekend, choosing instead to attend Celtic vs Aberdeen due to a prior commitment.

He is also expected to miss the upcoming clash against Fenerbahce, according to the Mail. The veteran will not be travelling to Turkey where former United boss Jose Mourinho awaits.

However, it’s claimed that there is no ill-will behind Ferguson’s absences. It is not unusual for the United stalwart to skip away trips.

For instance, he did not travel to Porto for United’s last Europa League match earlier this month. Furthermore, Ferguson has only attended one of the club’s away Premier League matches this season, when he journeyed to Villa Park.

Erik ten Hag, the current United boss, has honoured Ferguson following the news of his departure from a key role.

Speaking last week, Ten Hag acknowledged the significance of Ferguson’s influence at the club: “Of course it has an impact on us.

“Sir Alex is Manchester United. He built United to where the club is now, and it impacts us.”

However, Ten Hag expressed confidence in Ferguson’s ongoing support. He added: “But on the other side, we know, and Sir Alex knows what he wants.

“He wants to see a winning Manchester United, and I’m sure he’s always available for any advice, and we will need him.

“Now and then we have good contact. I would say, once in half a year I meet formally with him, but also of course, informally, around games.”
