Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been told what not to do with Cole Palmer to avoid unsettling the starlet.

Palmer made his first England start under interim boss Lee Carsley during Thursday’s humiliating defeat at Wembley against Greece.

But the ex-Manchester City starlet didn’t look anywhere near his devastating best.

Aside from a mistimed strike that sailed over the crossbar, Palmer wasn’t involved too much in England’s attacking play, with the 22-year-old instead operating from a deeper position.

At times picking up positions that resembled a holding midfielder, Palmer appeared to be sacrificed in order to let Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden adopt the more attacking roles in midfield.

Safe to say it didn’t work, with Carsley accepting responsibility for England’s tactical tweak post-match.

He told ITV Sport: “We were second best for a lot of tonight, it is disappointing. You are going to get setbacks and it’s important we respond.

“We tried something different and tried to overload the midfield. We tried it for 20 minutes yesterday, we experimented, and disappointed it didn’t come off.

“It’s unrealistic to expect too much and we will have to try again. All the goals were from mistakes, which is disappointing.”

While Carsley might remain optimistic around shoe-horning all of England’s attacking talent into the same XI, it isn’t the first time Palmer has been used out of position during his short but so far successful professional career.

After breaking into the Manchester City first-team, a chunk of Palmer’s minutes came in the unfamiliar role of left-wing.

Much more adept at coming in from the right, or playing as an outright creator in the No.10 role, Palmer was forced to move away from the Premier League champions in a bid to secure regular game time in his preferred position.

As such, Carsley’s unsuccessful Palmer experiment should offer a warning to current Chelsea boss Maresca that any attempts to fiddle with Palmer’s so far devastating role with the Blues could lead to the Manchester-born star growing frustrated.

In truth, there’s no real reason for Maresca to change things, given they’re working perfectly at the moment.

Palmer already has 11 goal and assist contributions for the season, having contributed to a total of 51 goals since making the £40million move from City last summer.
