Thomas Tuchel is in negotiations to become England’s next permanent manager, according to reports. Manchester United are also said to be interested in the German, though they will miss out if he is appointed by the FA to replace interim boss Lee Carsley.

England Under-21s manager Carsley took temporary charge in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s departure following defeat in the Euro 2024 final. He was widely expected to get the job on a permanent basis after kicking off his reign with Nations League wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

But things took a turn on Thursday night, when Carsley’s experimental side suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Greece, who beat the Three Lions for the first time in their history and inflicted their first competitive loss at Wembley in four years.

Carsley will get the opportunity to redeem himself on a trip to Finland this Sunday. But the heat is well and truly on, with Bild reporting that Tuchel is now ‘negotiating’ for the full-time position.

The German has won three league titles, a Champions League and a hoard of domestic cups across spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. He has been out of work since leaving Bayern at the end of last season as part of a mutual agreement.

United are believed to have interviewed Tuchel during the summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe weighed up whether to relieve Erik ten Hag of his duties. The Red Devils eventually stuck with the Dutchman, but links to Tuchel have once again sprung up following a poor start to the season.

Sir Jim and other senior United figures met in London earlier this week to discuss recent performances. They look set to give Ten Hag more time, but that could cost them the opportunity to hire Tuchel if England bosses like what they see.

Although contact has reportedly been made with Tuchel, The Telegraph claim that the FA are yet to ‘formally interview’ any of their top candidates and they are intent on keeping the process confidential while Carsley is at the helm.

Graham Potter – out of work since being sacked by Chelsea last year – is also believed to be on the FA’s radar, while Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has long been linked with the role, which is up for grabs for the first time since 2016.
