Ronald Koeman spoke to both Wout Weghorst and Jurrien Timber
Arsenal star Jurrien Timber angered ex-Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst during their time on international duty with Netherlands.
The two players came off the bench in Ronald Koeman’s side’s 5-2 thrashing against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Nations League on Saturday.
With another match on the horizon against Germany in Amsterdam on Tuesday, tensions flared at a training session. In an incident caught on video and circulated across social media, Timber’s tough tackle on Weghorst led to an immediate reaction from the striker.
Weghorst hit the deck in pain and was left angered by what he perceived to be a robust challenge. Words were swiftly exchanged, escalating to the point where an intervention from manager Koeman became necessary.
“I said something to you, I said something to them,” is what Koeman is reported to have stated as he attempted to defuse the situation.
However, Weghorst’s frustration did not subside, prompting Koeman to reportedly shout: “And now it’s over!”
Although Weghorst stayed on to finish the session, he was still visibly annoyed by the incident and hastily left once the training session was over.
The incident came after Koeman defended Matthijs de Ligt’s shaky display against Bosnia, during which the latter was directly responsible for both goals conceded by the Netherlands.
Koeman dismissed the blunders, insisting they weren’t a “big deal”. When quizzed about De Ligt’s performance, Koeman stated: “He himself realises that he was in the wrong position. This should not happen, but mistakes are part of football. I think it is unfair to make a big deal out of it.”
However, De Ligt was far less forgiving of his own display, describing it as “f****d” post-match. He confessed: “I think you know how I feel, we won but then comes the individual part. I should have done better at their second goal, and I know that.
“I don’t really know what happened.. I should have cleared the ball but I kept having doubts during the play. It’s just f****d. If this game is a missed opportunity for me? I don’t know, I just try to do my best.”
