Cole Palmer might have to fight for the number 10 role next season.
Cole Palmer faces the prospect of yet more Chelsea frustration after the Stamford Bridge hierarchy made a promise to a new arrival.
It’s been a hectic international break for Chelsea, who despite the absence of on-pitch action have found themselves in turmoil off it.
Reports claim the relationship between Chelsea’s co-owners Todd Bohely and Clearlake has been severed, with talk the latter could look to buy the former out in the coming weeks and months.
It comes after two years of haphazard strategy from Boehly and co., with Chelsea’s transfer strategy having been called into question a number of times.
Despite spending over £1billion on fresh talent since taking over, Chelsea haven’t enjoyed too many success stories in the transfer market, apart from the £40million purchase of Manchester City graduate Palmer.
Arriving on deadline day last year, Palmer enjoyed a stellar first season at the Bridge, netting 27 goals and providing a further 15 assists across all competitions.
However, according to the agent of one future Chelsea player, Palmer might have to make way from his preferred position in the coming seasons.
Representatives of Estevao Willian – a Brazil international who will join Chelsea next summer – revealed to Brazilian outlet UOL: “He can adapt to any style of play. Chelsea is a club that sees Estevao playing as a number ten, for us that is important. He can develop even more playing in the middle.”

Cole Palmer enjoyed a stellar 2023/24 campaign with the Blues.
It comes after Palmer opened up about his best position on the pitch last year, telling the official Chelsea website: “I played left-back when I was Under-10. Then I played midfield. Then later right wing, left wing, and striker. I made my first start at City as a striker.
“So I have played all along the frontline, but right-wing and no.10 are my best two positions, I would say.
“I played 10 most of the time in the academy, and in the past three years I’ve mainly played on the right wing. But I’m ready to help the team wherever I’m needed.”

It’s certainly where the 22-year-old has looked most comfortable as a Chelsea player so far, not least this season, with Palmer already boasting one goal and four assists to his name.
But, at least for the first half of the campaign, Palmer will only be able to add to his G/A tally via domestic competitions, as the England international was left out of Chelsea’s squad for the UEFA Conference League ‘League Phase’ fixtures.
