John Terry has reacted to a new Liverpool signing.
Chelsea icon John Terry has extended his best wishes to Rio Ngumoha following the youngster’s switch to Liverpool.
Ngumoha, hailed as one of the nation’s most thrilling prospects after impressing with Chelsea’s Under-16s, has made waves by opting for a move to Liverpool’s esteemed academy.
The 16-year-old forward, who had already featured for Chelsea’s U21s and was tipped as a future star at Stamford Bridge, turned down a scholarship offer from Chelsea in favour of the Reds.
Despite the disappointment for Terry, who returned to Chelsea as an academy coach in July 2023, he took to social media to congratulate Ngumoha on his new chapter.
“Delighted to sign for @liverpoolfc YNWA,” posted Ngumoha on Instagram, posing with the iconic No. 11 shirt of Liverpool. Terry responded warmly, commenting, “Good luck mate,” accompanied by a fist emoji.
Liverpool’s reputation for nurturing talent into the first team is believed to have influenced Ngumoha’s decision, with players like Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, and Trey Nyoni recently bridging the gap at Anfield. In contrast, Chelsea’s squad is brimming with fresh acquisitions.
The Premier League gave the green light to the transfer on Wednesday, allowing Ngumoha to go public with the news. Liverpool is now expected to compensate Chelsea with a five-figure sum for their role in developing the promising attacker.
Liverpool’s youth ranks welcomed a fresh face as they inducted an emerging talent into Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s U18 squad, raising expectations for a swift impact at the club. However, his departure casts a shadow over Chelsea’s strategy, particularly after the shift in dynamics since Clearlake Capital took the helm in May 2022, with Todd Boehly liberally funding first-team acquisitions.

Boehly once highlighted Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Mason Mount, and Trevoh Chalobah as beacons of success from the Blues’ academy, yet now, only James remains at Stamford Bridge, hinting at a dwindling link to Enzo Maresca’s main squad.
In stark contrast, Liverpool’s ethos under Jurgen Klopp continues with Slot’s integration this summer, a coach known for trusting and nurturing young talents, echoing the values that likely drew Ngumoha to Anfield.
Speaking about his philosophy at his inaugural Liverpool press conference, Slot remarked: “I like to see good players and if they are old or young, that doesn’t matter that much.
“It’s always nice for a club and team that young players come through the ranks. That always gives energy to a club. In the end, it’s all about the quality. If they continue doing well, there will be a fair chance that they will play.”
